  I.    COURSE DESCRIPTION:  A study of the management practices involved in the production of swine, horses and beef cattle.  The subject matter will consist of selection, reproduction, feeding, diseases, marketing, internal and external parasite control.  Laboratory exercises will require students to perform livestock management techniques. Students will be assigned animals to care for during the quarter.

 

II.    CREDITS:  3 semester hours credit, 2 hours lecture and 2 hours laboratory

                       

III.   SUGGESTED TEXTBOOK:  Stockman's Handbook by Ensminger

 

 IV.  COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 

            After completion of this course, the student should be able to do the following:

            A.  Identify tools to work with livestock

            B.  Calculate the dosage rates for animal vaccines and medications

            C.  Determine dosage of drugs for animals

            D.  Describe the symptoms and preventative measures for the most common livestock diseases.

            E.  Explain how to prevent and control internal and external parasites.

            F.  Discuss the various marketing options and the advantages of each.

            G.  Give vaccinations to swine, cattle and horses.

            H.  Give a bolus to an animal.

            I.  Dehorn cattle.

            J. Castrate animals.

            K.  Implant cattle.

            L.  Provide correct daily care for livestock.

            M.  Pregnancy test cattle.

            N.  Determine age of cattle by mouthing procedure.

            O.  Perform artificial insemination in cattle

*Calf care will be graded based on weight gain. A sliding scale will be created based on the performance data gleaned from the exercise.

**Each student will receive a numeric grade of from 60-100 for participation in lab (i.e. "Fence Sitters" = 60)

 

         GRADING SCALE:          A =   90 - 100

                                                      B =   80 -  89

                                                      C =   70 -  79

                                                      D =   60 -  69

                                                      F = Below 60

 

VII.  POLICIES, METHODS, AND COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

 

            A.  See the current catalog for student responsibilities.  Last day to drop is November 10, 2005.

            B.  Field trips will be taken during labs to nearby farms to demonstrate livestock management practices.

            C.  Students will be required to demonstrate ability to perform these management practices.

            D.  Each student (or pair) will be required to care for an animal during a large percentage of the semester including weekends.  Failure to meet this responsibility will result in a failing grade for the course.

            E.  Each student should bring work clothes and shoes to each lab meeting.

            F.  If a procedure is not completed by a student, a one page paper describing that procedure must be turned in completed.

           G.  Perfect attendance (no missed labs, no missed lectures and no tardies) will result in 3 bonus points on final grade.

           H.  Use of cell phones will not be permitted.

 

VIII.  Final Exam: Tuesday, December 14, at 10:00 - 11:50 a.m.

 

IX.    Grades

           

Grades are not mailed to students. You must access grades through Web for Students  www.columbiastate.edu  five (5) working days after grades are required in Admissions.  Students needing official copies of grades must request it in writing from the Office of Admissions and Records. Call the transcript information line at 931/540-2550 for detailed instructions.  Students may print a copy of their grades from Web for Students.

 

X.  Emergencies

In the case of an emergency, students are to follow the directions given by the instructor.  All students should note the "Emergency Procedures Guide" posted in the classroom.
